Scholarships
The St. Paul Educational Trust Endowed Scholarship Program
The St. Paul Educational Trust has ten endowed scholarships available to students in St. Paul Parish. Three of the scholarships are for Catholic High Schools and seven are for St. Paul School.
Any parishioner planning to attend a Catholic high school in the metro Detroit area, are eligible and encouraged to apply for one of these scholarships. The following is a listing of the scholarships available:
The Monsignor Francis X. Canfield Scholarship is a $3,000 grant to be used toward tuition at a Catholic High School. It is awarded to an incoming freshman every year and can be renewed for each of the following three years of high school provided a “B” average is maintained. The Canfield Scholarship has been awarded each year since 1985. Originally called the St. Paul Parish Scholarship, it was renamed in 1991 to honor Monsignor Canfield, who served as pastor of St. Paul Parish from 1971 to 1991. Monsignor Canfield died in October 1998.
The Couzens Family Scholarship is a $2,000 grant to be used toward tuition at a Catholic High School. It is awarded each year to an incoming freshman and can be renewed for each of the following three years of high school provided a “B” average is maintained. The late Frank Couzens, Jr. was a founding member of the Educational Trust and served on the board for more than 30 years
The Gertrude and Donald McSorley Scholarship is a $1,000 four year renewing scholarship for any eighth grade St. Paul Parish graduate, who will be attending a Catholic high school. The four year scholarship continues throughout the student’s attendance at the Catholic high school so long as the student continues to maintain a B+ grade point average. The McSorley Scholarship will be awarded next in 2021.

The Willam Cardinal Scholarship is a full tuition, merit-based scholarship, awarded annually to an incoming St. Paul School Eighth Grader who exhibits outstanding academic achievement, leadership and character. The recipient is chosen by the St. Paul Parish Scholarship Committee after reviewing all the applications. The scholarship is named after Mr. Cardinal, a long-time parishioner who left a large bequest to the Educational Trust in his will.
Joseph and Alice Wright Scholarship is a $1,500 merit based scholarship, which is awarded annually to a deserving fifth grade parishioner entering the sixth grade at St. Paul School. The scholarship can be renewed for all of junior high. The recipient is chosen by the St. Paul Parish Scholarship Committee after reviewing all the applications. Mr. and Mrs. Wright were long-time parishioners of St. Paul’s and all five of their children graduated from St. Paul School.
The Eileen Hickey King Scholarship is a tuition subsidy of $3,000 per school year for any student at St. Paul School. Any current or prospective St. Paul School family is eligible to apply for the scholarship. The scholarship is named after Mrs. King who was a member of the parish her entire life. The scholarship is awarded based on financial need.
The Arthur and Honoria Roshak Scholarships: There are two Roshak Scholarships, which are tuition subsidies of $3,000 each per school year for any students at St. Paul School. Any current or prospective St. Paul School family is eligible to apply for the scholarship. Mr. Roshak set up the scholarship in memory of his wife. These scholarship are awarded based on financial need.
The Shields Family Scholarship is a $3,000 tuition subsidy given each year to a middle school student at St. Paul School. Michael Shields established the scholarship in 2016, It is awarded based on financial need.
The FitzSimons Family Scholarship is a tuition subsidy of $1,000 for an incoming or returning kindergarten or first grade student at St. Paul School. Many members of the FitzSimons’ family are long-time parishioners.
